William Grant Still

Black, Red, White, and Blue
Composers of color and their legacy

This sampling of the work of African-American and African-European composers reveals an extraordinary diversity of source, style and influence. Englishman Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was universally esteemed for his dramatic and theatrical compositions and as a conductor. Professor at the prestigeous Guildhall School, his travels included three tours to the United States as conductor of his own works.

Mississippi born William Grant Still (1895-1978) was called by Stowkowski "one of our greatest American composers." Still's magnificent career included three consecutive Guggenheim Fellowships; honorary doctorates from Howard University, Bates, College, Oberlin College, and the Univrsity of Arkansas; as well as commissions by the League of Composers, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the New York World's Fair.

Black, Red, White, and Blue showcases works of Coleridge-Taylor, Still, Ulysses Kay, and others.
