Echoes of the Gilded Age is a typically eclectic program
of music heard in 19th century America, including beloved works by Haydn
and Rossini, as well as gems by American composers, immensely popular
in their day but less familiar to the 21st century audience.
Featured is the recently rediscovered
and restored Second Pot-pourri, a thrilling composition by Thomas Ryan,
venerated member of the original Quintet Club. Also included are the Quintet
(opus 34) of Ludwig Spohr, the Nocturne of William Schade (the Club's
flutist) and an arrangement of Louis Moreau Gottschalk's rocking 1848
tribute to Afro-Cuban rhythms, "Bamboula."
