Louis Moreau Gottschalk

Orpheus among Magnolias
Composers of the American South

In celebration of the great Southern musical heritage,
the New Mendelssohn Quintet Club performs music of Southern composers including works of Georgia's 19th-century poet laureate and virtuoso flutist Sidney Lanier; North Carolina's Lamar Stringfield, whose 1927 suite From the Southern Mountains won the Pulitzer Prize; Mississippi son William Grant Still, feted by Stowkowski as "one of America's greatest composers;" and Louis Moreau Gottschalk, New Orleans' (and America's) first international concert superstar.
